Treasure Without Measure

Dear Friend,

It happened one afternoon… I watched a remarkable young man walk away from me. I felt a deep-down hurt. He was a good guy. He kept all the commandments, and he wanted to know what more he should do. I was very happy, and I invited him to come and follow me as one of my close disciples. “Go, sell everything you own,” I said. “Give the money to the poor. Then come with me.” (See Mk 10:21.)

There was one problem, though. Money! This young man had lots of it. Yet I was a man with no home, no possessions, and just enough food for the day. My wealth was in my Father’s care. I tried to explain that. The man would have to let all of his possessions go and let God take care of him. But this was too much for him. He was too attached to all the things that money can buy. He walked away.

This shocked my followers. They had thought that rich people had it made. I told them that money may get them many things, but it doesn’t guarantee a place in heaven. God isn’t impressed with large bank accounts! What God wants are people who put their faith and trust in him. Only a trusting heart opens us up to God’s love. And God’s love is a treasure without measure!

Your Friend,

Jesus

Quiet Place

Think about this scene for a moment. How would you feel if you were the wealthy man and you received this special call? How do you think Jesus felt when the man refused? Talk to Jesus. Tell him that he is more to you than all the money in the world. Ask God to help you use your things wisely. Tell him you know that money isn’t more important than God’s love.
