Dear My Friend,

It bugs me that every time I go to a sleepover, I end up calling my parents to come pick me up before it’s time for bed. Sometimes I even cry (usually in the bathroom where no one sees) because I want to go home. It’s embarrassing! I’m in 5 th grade! None of my friends feel like that.

Signed,
Shades of red

Maybe your friends don’t get homesick, but lots of kids do. It simply means you’d rather spend the night at home with your family than anywhere else. And that’s okay. If you’re not ready for sleepovers, you’re not. So the next time you’re invited to one, explain to your friend that you’d like to come for the evening, but you won’t be spending the night. That way you can still join in the fun, but you won’t have to worry about getting homesick because you’ll know that you’ll be going home before it’s time for bed. Here’s something else you can try. Ask if you can invite your friends to spend the night at your house until you’re ready to spend the night at theirs. Eventually, you’ll want to try it again. And by then, you’ll probably enjoy it!
