The Black Stallion The Black Stallion is about a boy named Alec who survives a shipwreck. Alec’s father dies in the wreck. The only other survivor is a beautiful black horse. Alec slowly and patiently tames Black. After they are rescued, Alec meets Henry, a former horse trainer. He trains Black and Alec to race, and they end up racing against two champion horses. “My favorite part of this film was when Alec and Black make it back home. It was important for Alec to race because he wanted to show everyone the mysterious horse the press was talking about in the newspaper.” “The most important thing Alec learned from Henry was to trust the horse while riding him. Alec wanted to be in a race and he practiced and practiced until he finally learned to be perfect at riding horses.” “Alec and Black became such good friends because in the beginning, Alec helped the horse. Then the horse helped Alec. If you like animals, you will love this film.” “The thing I most liked about the film was the connection Alec and Black had. I liked Alec because he was determined to win.” “I would recommend the movie to second grade and up because little kids may not understand the movie.” To do before the movie: Talk about animal films you have seen and enjoyed. To do after the movie: Look up the story of Alexander the Great and his horse Bucephalus. From the library, get the book that this movie was based on. The Black Stallion was written by Walter Farley in 1941. Was it right for Alec to keep the secret from his mother? Why or why not?
