The Fox and the Hound

By Michael Nerbun

The Fox and the Hound is the story of Copper, a hound dog, and Tod, a red fox. They were two animals that are usually enemies because they are very different from each other. But they didn’t know they were supposed to be enemies, and before anybody told them, they met and decided they liked each other. In fact, a line in the story that I really liked was, "When you’re the best of friends, you’re not aware that you make such a funny pair."

This story makes me think that as a human you might be very different from someone else, like a different race or nationality, and you could still be good friends because people are people, and you can be friends with anyone. But then others might tell you that you should be enemies because you are different. That could make you become mean towards one another.

In the story that is kind of what happens. Copper grows up, and his master who is a hunter teaches him to go after other animals like rabbits, raccoons, and foxes. So for a while Copper tries to catch Tod. But true friends don’t give up on one another. And in the end, Copper and Tod were loyal to their friendship. Because of their loyalty, Copper’s mean owner changed his attitude towards others.

The reason I recommend this film is because it teaches a lesson about friendship. I also liked two silly birds in the story who were always trying to catch a caterpillar. That part was really funny.

Talk it Over

Before the Movie:

Talk to your mom or dad about a time when they were young and had trouble keeping a friendship going.

After the Movie:

Why do you think Tod and Copper’s friendship was so great?

Why would you like to have a friendship like theirs?
