Rigoletto

By Kevin Wegendt

Rigoletto is a "fairy tale" set in the small rural town of Castle Gate in the mid-1900’s. The community is undergoing a hard time and almost miraculously begins receiving the help it needs from an unknown benefactor. In the meantime, however, farmers begin to lose their farms, families lose their homes, and businesses are forced to close. In their desperate search for an explanation for these events, the people of the town erroneously put the blame on the newest resident of the town, Mr. Ribaldi, owner of the mansion on the hill. Although no one knows him personally, they hold him in suspicion due to his quiet, almost mysterious, way of life.

One family, however, discovers the truth about Mr. Ribaldi. A young girl named Bonnie breaks Mr. Ribaldi’s shroud of secrecy and silence by her honesty and kindness. She comes to learn that real beauty comes from within and carries with it a power able to change lives.

This is one of my very favorite movies! I especially like the scene where the children of Castle Gate go to spy on Mr. Ribaldi to see if he really is a monster like the rumors say. It’s actually really funny!

Rigoletto is filled with music and mystery…and shows us all that things are not always as they appear….

Talk It Over

Before you watch:

Talk about how some people are shunned because of the work they do, their appearance, their religion, or even the way they talk.

After the movie:

Discuss ways you can educate yourself about people in your own life who may be different. We are able to prevent the isolation that comes from ignorance, and reach out with love and compassion to others once we have taken the time to know them better. Decide to learn more about people from other countries, different religions, or people with disabilities.
