Pedro Poveda Castroverde
Pedro lived one hundred years ago at the turn of the century...just
like we do! His great desire was to become a priest. After he graduated
from college in 1897 he began to study for the priesthood and was later
ordained.
In the part of Spain where he lived, the people who were very poor lived
in caves dug in hillsides. Pedro decided that he wanted to help these
people. Pedro believed that education would help poor people to be able
to live with more dignity and start to earn a better living. No one should
live in poverty. He knew that poverty is often because of unjust situations
that prevent people from earning a decent living. These people rarely
received a good education. So he established schools and workshops to
teach both the adults and the children. These schools were places where
the Spanish people were educated and where they learned about Christ and
how to live a Christian life. Because of his courage and faithfulness
to Christ, Pedro died a martyr at the age of sixty-two during the Spanish
Civil War.

Pedro realized that education is a means out of poverty.
He always taught Christian values.
He lived joyfully in the light of Christ.
Pedro stopped at nothing to help others.
He was faithful to Christ, even to the point of death.
A quote that inspired Pedro:
"Unless a grain of wheat dies, it remains a grain
wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit." (John 12:24)
