Saint Helen
Christians had been imprisoned and put to death for following Jesus in the years after he had ascended into heaven. As time went on, Christians had to go "underground." It was very difficult, because they always had to worship in hiding, afraid of being caught. In 313, however, by a decree of Emperor Constantine, the empire finally began to accept and put up with the Christians. They could begin to build real churches and worship openly. Saint Helen was the mother of this great Emperor. Helen became Christian when she was 63 years old and lived many years in the Holy Land where Jesus had lived and died. When Constantine ordered a church to be built on Calvary, Saint Helen went to oversee the work. During the building, the true cross of Jesus was discovered there! Helen is known as the one who found the cross of Jesus Christ. She spent the rest of her life helping the poor and prisoners. Even though she was the mother of the Emperor, she dressed plainly and worked with the simplest people in the Empire. She was a true Christian who followed Jesus’ way of love and kindness. Your Turn Pledge Card Jesus, help me to look around and notice just one person who needs a
friend this month. Teach me how to include that person in my love like
Saint Helen did in her life. Amen. Home Copyright © 1999-2007, Daughters of St. Paul. All Rights Reserved.
