Blessed John of Fiesole
This great artist was born in Viechio du Mugello, Italy, around 1400. As a young man he decided to dedicate his life to God and became a Dominican priest. John’s great talent was in art. He began by drawing pictures of Jesus on the walls inside the rooms of the priests and brothers in his monastery (like the pictures of Jesus you may hang in your room). Soon John became an artist-on-demand for other religious communities. Eventually his great artistic ability brought him to Rome. For the beauty and innocence of his paintings and the goodness of his life, John was given the nickname by which he is known by most people, even today: Fra Angelico (Brother Angel). Fra Angelico was a man of deep prayer and humility. He wanted his art to help people reflect on the lives of Jesus, Mary, and the saints. He died in 1455. My Pledge Dear Jesus, Fra Angelico was a man of prayer and love for you. I may not be a great artist, but I can love you with my whole heart. May my life be a reflection of your art—me!
